Ensayista, poeta y dramaturgo inglés. Su poema acerca de la batalla de Blenheim, La campaña (1705), aparte de otorgarle fama literaria, atrajo la atención de los líderes de los whigs y le allanó el camino para alcanzar importantes puestos en el gobierno (incluso el de secretario de Estado). Junto a Sir Richard Steele, fue uno de los principales colaboradores y figura emblemática de los periódicos The Tatler (1709–11) y The Spectator (1711–12, 1714). Addison es uno de los maestros más admirados de la prosa inglesa, en la que lleva el ensayo periodístico hasta la perfección. Su Catón (1713), exitosa obra teatral con connotaciones políticas, es considerada una de las tragedias más importantes del s. XVIII.
